At Wessington Juniors, our mission is simple: to help children fall in love with the game of football. We understand that sometimes, kids need a second chance to find that love again. By creating a supportive environment, we’ve seen many young players flourish — just like Henry.
Henry, a passionate U8 player, had been struggling with his enjoyment of football at his previous club. Our U8s coach, who knew Henry from his son’s school, heard that Henry was feeling discouraged and had decided to leave his team. Knowing Henry’s love for football, the coach invited him to attend a few taster sessions at Wessington Juniors, hoping he might rediscover his enthusiasm for the sport.
Henry’s mum shared that his confidence had taken a hit, but he was excited to try something new. After just the first session, Henry felt a renewed sense of excitement — his mum described how he “loved it.” With the blessing of his former club, Henry officially joined Wessington Juniors in January 2024, and from that point on, he never looked back.
Now...
Since joining, Henry has thrived. He quickly regained his confidence, with his mum calling Wessington Juniors his “safe place.” He’s made new friends, rediscovered his love for the game, and even celebrated his 9th birthday with fun games and a BBQ at Victoria Park.
Henry’s enthusiasm on the pitch has not gone unnoticed. He was voted “Parents’ Player of the Year” for the Lions, a reflection of his dedication and the joy he brings to every match. His passion for football is stronger than ever, and he eagerly attends additional training sessions to continue developing his skills.
When Henry was unable to play for the Lions in a recent tournament due to a prior engagement, he took the opportunity to step up and join the U9s team. When he scored a goal, his teammates celebrated with him in a wonderful display of camaraderie and support.
Henry’s journey reminds us that sometimes, all a child needs is a second chance in the right environment to truly enjoy and excel in football.
